Care Guide
How to Clean a Custom Cap Without Losing the Shape
A cap is a structured object, and most caps are ruined by the cleaning method rather than by wear. This guide covers the methods that work on each fabric and decoration type — and the ones that flatten a crown or lift a print.

Why this matters commercially, not just at home
If you sell or distribute branded caps, you will be asked how to clean them. The answer depends on the fabric and the decoration together, which is why a single generic instruction is usually wrong for at least part of the range.
The two most common failures are a collapsed structured crown and a lifted print. Both are avoidable, and both are caused by the same two things: too much heat and too much agitation.
The instructions below are the ones we pass on with embroidered, printed and patch-decorated orders. They apply to hand washing; a structured cap should not go into a washing machine regardless of what the label says.
How to clean by decoration type
Embroidered caps are the most forgiving. Thread is colourfast and mechanically fixed, so the risk is not the stitching but the fabric around it and the backing behind the front panel. Hand wash in cool water with a mild detergent, work the surface with a soft brush, rinse and air dry over something that holds the crown shape.
Printed and sublimated caps need less agitation. Sublimated designs are dyed into the fibre and tolerate gentle washing; surface prints and transfers are a layer on top of the fabric and can lift at the edges if scrubbed or heated. Cool water, no brushing on the printed area, no tumble drying.
Patch-decorated caps depend on the patch material. A leather patch should not be soaked — wipe it with a damp cloth and keep it away from detergent. Woven and PVC patches tolerate the same treatment as the fabric, but avoid direct heat on the adhesive edge.
Drying, storage and what not to do
Air dry only, and dry the cap over something that holds the crown and the curve of the bill. Drying flat is what produces a crushed front panel; drying over a radiator or in direct sun is what shrinks the fabric and sets creases.
Never put a structured cap in a washing machine or a tumble dryer. The buckram behind the front panel is what gives the crown its shape, and once it is distorted it does not come back.
For a cap worn daily, clean it before marks set rather than after. Most stains on headwear are sweat and skin oils at the forehead band, and those lift easily with cool water and a mild detergent if they have not been heat-set by a dryer.

Where this project can go wrong
Washing machine and tumble dryer
The most common cause of a collapsed structured crown. Both are avoidable — hand wash and air dry.
Brushing a printed design
Abrasion lifts the edge of a surface print. Sublimated designs tolerate it; transfers do not.
Soaking a leather patch
Leather stiffens, darkens and can separate from the panel once soaked and dried.
Drying flat or in direct sun
Drying flat crushes the front panel; direct sun shrinks fabric and sets creases.
What we confirm before production
Every order is quoted by the actual spec, sampled for approval, and checked against the approved sample before shipping.
Care instructions supplied with the order
We provide washing and drying guidance matched to the fabric and the decoration on your order.
Decoration chosen for the care regime
If your customers will wash frequently, we will say so before the decoration method is fixed.
Patch and print options
Where a design will not tolerate washing, we will recommend a method that will.
Same guidance across a range
One instruction set can cover an entire range when fabric and decoration are planned together.
Common questions
A structured cap should not go into a washing machine. The backing behind the front panel is what holds the crown, and machine agitation distorts it. Hand wash in cool water instead.
Air dry it over something that holds the crown and the curve of the bill. Never tumble dry, and avoid drying it flat or in direct sun.
Embroidery is the most washing-tolerant decoration. The risk is to the fabric and the crown structure around the stitching, not to the thread itself.
Yes, gently. Use cool water with mild detergent and do not brush over the printed area. Surface prints and transfers can lift at the edges under abrasion or heat.
Wipe it with a damp cloth only. Do not soak it and keep detergent away from the leather, which stiffens and can separate from the panel once wet.
Clean them before they set. Cool water with a mild detergent lifts sweat and skin oils easily if the cap has not been through a dryer.
No. Bleach weakens fibres and shifts colour, and it is particularly damaging on coloured embroidery thread.
Yes. Care instructions can be included in the packing so that your customers receive the right guidance with the product.
