Cap block

Custom knit beanies and cuff hats

A knit beanie is a gauge and a stitch problem before it is a design problem: the needle gauge sets the texture, the yarn sets the warmth, and the cuff sets the fit. This block covers the three styles we knit in volume.

Questions

What gauge should a promotional beanie be?

7GG is the usual answer: chunky enough to look like a winter hat, fine enough to keep the piece price down and to hold a woven label cleanly. 3GG and 5GG are for retail programmes where the texture is the selling point.

Can a beanie carry a logo?

Yes — a woven label or a leather patch on the cuff is the most common, because embroidery on knit sinks into the stitch. If embroidery is required, a tighter gauge (9GG or 12GG) holds it better.

Acrylic or wool?

Acrylic is cheaper, holds colour well and is the standard for promotional work. Wool or a wool blend feels warmer and better, and costs more. A 30% wool blend is the usual compromise for retail.
